Springfield, Mass. - Junior Anna Barnes (Storrs, Conn.) bested the field in the mile and 800-meter run to lead the Trinity College women's indoor track and field team at the Springfield College Massasoit Invitational on Saturday. After Saturday's impressive performance, the team returns to action on February 2nd for the start of the New England Open Championships at the Reggie Lewis Center in Roxbury, Mass.
Barnes turned in a first-place, 2:20.99 finals time in the 800-meter run and added a first-place finish in the mile run, finishing more than five seconds ahead of the field. Junior Lauren Barett (Peabody, Mass.), senior Sara Curtis (Milton, Mass.) and sophomore Nina Bourgeois (Rochester, Mass.) finished third, fourth and fifth in the mile-run for Trinity as well. In other distance events, juniors Rachel Scheub (Rochester, Mass.) and Caroline Sullivan (South Hadley, Mass.) finished second and third, respectively, in the 1,000-meter run, separated by less than a second. The 3,000-meter run was dominated by Trinity as senior Briana Daley (Oak Park, Ill.) finished first with a finals time of 10:43.50, followed by sophomores Samantha Feenstra (Cape Elizabeth, Maine), Grace Harrison (Montclair, N.J.) and senior Hannah Ells (Amesbury, Mass.), in order.
In sprints, sophomore Katie Marlow-Benedick (Weston, Mass.) took second in the 200-meter dash, just .26 seconds out of first place and .80 seconds ahead of rookie teammate Emma Buckley (Hanover, Mass.). Junior Morgan Hallow (Charlotte, N.C.) turned in a fifth-place performance in the 200 with a 27.03 finals time. Trinity's 4x400-meter relay team, made up of Barnes, Marlow-Benedick, Hallow and Buckley, finished with a 4:12.97 finals time to take second place less than a second off the top time.
Sophomore Katherine Bullock (Cape Neddick, Maine) led the Bantams in field events, finishing third in the long jump with a finals distance of 4.86m and added a fourth-place finish in the triple jump.
