Anderson And Carpenter Lead Young Trinity Volleyball As Captains In 2009
Hartford, Conn. - The Trinity College volleyball program will field a young but deep cadre of talented and versatile athletes in 2009, eager to return to the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Championship Tournament for the fifth time in the last six seasons. The Bantams, coached by Jennifer Bowman (6th Season), open the season in the Brandeis Invitational on Friday, September 11 and Saturday, September 12. Trinity will play Babson and Wentworth on Friday night at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m., respectively, and the tournament will reseed for Saturday's matches.
Junior co-captain Kristen Anderson (West Haven, Conn.) is a proven veteran on the right side, having finished with 125 kills for a .186 kill percentage (2nd on team), 88 assists, 24 aces, 147 digs, and 12 blocks a year ago, and can also give the Bantams height at the setter position. Sophomore Jen Low (San Francisco, Calif.) was fantastic as the starting setter in her freshman season with a team-high 660 assists with 31 aces (T2nd on team), and 173 digs (2nd on team), should be even better this fall.
Fellow rookie Sarah Blagden (Charleston, S.C.), who led the Bantams in digs with 349 (6th in NESCAC) and added 17 service aces as the starting libero in 2009, should see more time as an outside hitter in her second year. Sophomore Emily Guthorn (Huntington Beach, Calif.) made 123 kills for a team-best .201 kill percentage to go with 19 aces, and 103 digs last season, and will continue to contribute as both an OH and an RS, while freshman OH Danielle Isaman (West Hartford, Conn.) steps in as a legitimate offensive weapon. Sophomore co-captain Penelope Carpenter (St. Thomas, Virgin Islands) adds depth at right-side hitter.
In the middle, sophomores Kelly O'Brien (Pelham Manor, N.Y.) and Courtney Chaloff (Chestnut Hill, Mass.) are both improving rapidly, while freshman MH Devon McGivillray (Watchung, N.J.) is the tallest player on the squad at 6-foot-1. Sophomore Alexandra Pell (San Diego, Calif.), who did not play in 2008, will be the libero.
