Trinity Volleyball Swept By Bowdoin

Hartford, Conn. – Freshman OH Caroline Flaharty (Fort Myers, Fla.) had a match-high 12 kills, an ace, and seven digs to lead the visiting Bowdoin College Polar Bears to a 3-0 victory over the Trinity College Bantams in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) volleyball action this evening at Oosting Gymnasium.  Trinity falls to 6-7 overall and 0-5 in the NESCAC with its third league loss in eight days, while Bowdoin, ranked No. 9 in New England, improves to 8-6 overall and 5-1 in the NESCAC with its third conference win in a row.  Trinity hosts NESCAC rival Tufts, ranked No. 2 in New England, tomorrow at 1 p.m. and the Polar Bears stay in the league as well with a 1 p.m. match at Amherst.

Trinity volleyball was also hosting a Dig Pink Night fundraising event for breast cancer awareness in partnership with The Side-Out Foundation which directly funds "game-changing" breast cancer research and support. Trinity donned pink uniforms for the evening while fans wore pink in the crowd.

The teams battled to 16-all tie in the first set, but Bowdoin used a 5-1 run to go ahead, 21-17, on its way to a 25-20 win.  In the second set, the Polar Bears scored four points in a row early to turn a 7-6 lead into an 11-6 advantage and eventually took a 2-0 lead in the match with a 25-17 victory in the set.  The Polar Bears never trailed in the final set, winning, 25-19.

Sophomore OH Colette Scheffers (Flossmoor, Ill.) paced the Bantams with eight kills to go with eight digs, while junior tri-captain OH Rachel Underwood (Danville, Calif.) added seven kills and a team-best nine digs, and rookie S Jessica Yang (Pacific Palisades, Calif.) contributed 21 assists and a block solo.  Junior Lisa Sheldon (Venice, Calif.) notched a match-high 10 digs and four service aces for the visitors.
