Hartford, Conn. – Senior OH Rachel Underwood (Danville, Calif.) collected 31 kills and  34 digs in two matches to lead the Trinity College Bantams to a pair of wins on day two of the Trinity Volleyball Invitational at Oosting Gymnasium this afternoon.  Trinity outlasted the Clark University Cougars, 3-2, in its early match and blanked the Westfield State University Owls, 3-0, to close the tournament at 3-0.  The Bantams had won, 3-2, against Eastern Connecticut last night to open the event.  Clark won against Eastern Connecticut, 3-0, and the Owls lost to the Warriors, 3-0.  Clark, which downed Westfield State, 3-2, yesterday finished 2-1 in the tournament, while Eastern Connecticut finished 1-2, and Westfield State was 0-3.

Trinity won two close contests to open the Clark match, taking the first set, 26-24, thanks to a kill by Underwood and an ace by sophomore S Jessica Yang (Pacific Palisades, Calif.) to close it out, and, 25-21, in the second set.  The Cougars rallied to win the third and fourth set, 25-21, and, 25-23, respectively, and led in the fifth, 10-9, before the Bantams scored the match’s final six points.  Yang and junior OH Colette Scheffers (Flossmoor, Ill.) scored two kills apiece during the 6-0 run for the Bantams.

Scheffers finished with 24 kills and 26 digs, while Underwood added 20 kills, four aces, and 15 digs.  Yang amassed 46 assists to go with five kills, two aces, and 15 digs, while junior L Ali Odermann (Lenexa, Kansas) had a match-high 32 digs.  Caitlin Leggett (Durham, N.C.) paced Clark with 12 digs, while Margarita Perez-Maza (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) added 31 assists, and Rayme Quiban (Seattle, Wash.) had 29 digs. 

Trinity had little trouble with Westfield State, winning, 25-19, 25-12, and, 25-15.  Underwood had 11 kills and 19 digs, while junior MH Wyllie Boughton (Andover, Mass.) added 10 kills, two aces, and two blocks for the Bantams.  Karolyn Higgins (Billerica, Mass.) had a team-high four kills, while Ally Rega (Chelmsford, Mass.) recorded 14 assists, and Jess Haradon (Mansfield, Mass.) finished with 12 digs for the Owls.
